While STRATA’s edge has always been our ability to custody unconventional and alternative assets, sometimes investors and advisors ask about setting up an online brokerage account within a STRATA IRA. Through STRATA Trust Company’s longstanding relationship with TD Ameritrade Institutional, our clients and their advisors can enjoy having an online brokerage account within their STRATA IRA for trading public stocks, mutual funds, ETFs and more.
STRATA Trust Company is pleased to be one of a limited number of third party IRA custodians that TD Ameritrade has allowed under its institutional platform. Online trading accounts with other brokerage firms may also be held in a STRATA account provided the brokerage firm permits the trading account registration in the name of the third party IRA custodian. What does this mean? A brokerage account, just like other IRA-owned assets, must be setup (or titled) in the name of the custodian for benefit of the IRA account owner (STRATA Trust Company, Custodian FBO John Doe IRA) and reflect the custodian’s tax ID rather than the investor’s social security number.
TD AMERITRADE’S LATEST MARKET SURVEY
Despite the market ups and downs, there are signs that investors and their advisors are looking ahead with confidence. According to a recent 2019 RIA Sentiment Survey conducted by TD Ameritrade Institutional, investors are expressing interest in non-traditional public stocks and socially responsible investments, which focus on sustainability, responsibility or mission-related causes (often called ESG investing). The survey also asked advisors to share their views on the economy and the market. Overall, the advisors surveyed are upbeat when it comes to stocks and the economy in 2019. Of the registered investment advisors surveyed, 62% were optimistic about the U.S. economy and 47% think stock prices will increase or be on equal footing as 2018.
HOW IT WORKS
We make it easy. If you would like to open a brokerage account with TD Ameritrade, simply contact our Client Services team to request the TD Ameritrade Brokerage Account forms and how-to’s.
- TD Ameritrade’s Trading Authorization Agreement form, where you may list up to two trading agents. You and each agent will need to sign and date.
- STRATA’s Investment Direction for Public Investments, where you will authorize the dollar amount and method for us send funds to your TDA account.
Email both forms to STRATA at Operations@StrataTrust.com. Allow approximately 10 days for TD Ameritrade Institutional to open and STRATA to fund your TDA brokerage account. Once ready, you may begin placing online trades immediately.
